Balcony Bras

A balcony bra — also known as a balconette bra — is one of the most flattering shapes in lingerie, and one that many women don't fully understand until they try one. The key is in the wire: on a balcony bra, the underwire on each cup forms a U-shape that sits up into the sternum, scooping the entire breast and lifting it upwards rather than pushing it inward. The cup is also deeper at the apex — the central section — which means the bra genuinely holds and reshapes the bust rather than just containing it. The result is a lifted, rounded silhouette that pushes volume upwards in a way few other shapes can match. This makes the balcony bra particularly wonderful if you've noticed a little loss of volume over the years — whether after having children, or simply as breast tissue naturally softens with age. A great balcony or balconette bra gives that lift back beautifully.

At Caroline Randell, two houses define this shape for us. Aubade make arguably the finest balcony bra available — their signature construction uses a three-section cup that pulls in neatly at the sides, so the breast is lifted and rounded without spreading outward. The result is a much more elegant, flattering shape than a two-section cup can achieve. The U-wire sits precisely in the sternum, and the depth at the apex is exactly right for genuine support and lift. Marie Jo offer superb balcony and balconette bras in both padded and non-padded options — for those who want a smooth, rounded shape, and those who prefer a more natural silhouette. Both houses work across a range of cup sizes, and both reward a proper fitting.

One of the balcony bra's great practical strengths is where it sits at the sides: because it's lower at the outer edge where the strap meets the cup, it disappears completely under scoop necks and square necklines — two of the trickiest shapes to wear with a conventional bra. You get the lift and shape in all the right places, with none of the bra visible at the sides. That said, most of our customers find they need more than one bra shape in their lingerie drawer, because they wear more than one neckline. A balcony bra is your scoop-neck and square-neck solution. For V-necks, lower necklines, or anything that needs more coverage in the centre, a plunge bra takes over — and the Aubade Rosessence in particular bridges the gap beautifully, offering a plunge shape with real support and coverage. The two shapes work together rather than competing.

For those who are very full in the cup — particularly fuller at the top or centre of the bust — a balcony bra can occasionally feel a little low. In those cases we'd often suggest looking at a full cup bra first. However, it's always worth trying the Empreinte balcony styles before ruling the shape out entirely: their cups have exceptional depth and come up higher in the centre than most, providing remarkable support and a beautiful shape even for larger cups. If you'd like guidance on which shape is right for your bust and your wardrobe, our WhatsApp fitting service is always on hand — just send us your size and we'll help you find the right fit from there.

Frequently Asked Questions About Balcony Bras

What is a balcony bra?

A balcony bra — also called a balconette bra — is a style where the underwire forms a U-shape that sits up into the sternum, scooping the breast and lifting it upward. The cup is deeper at the centre (the apex), which gives the bra its distinctive lifting and reshaping effect. The overall silhouette is rounded and uplifted rather than pushed inward, which is what sets it apart from a plunge. It tends to sit lower at the outer edge, making it ideal for scoop and square necklines where a conventional bra would show at the sides.

What is the difference between a balcony bra and a balconette bra?

Balcony and balconette are two names for the same shape — the terms are used interchangeably across different brands and countries. Some brands use one, some use the other. There is no meaningful difference in construction or fit between them. At Caroline Randell, we use both terms because our customers search for both, but they refer to the same beautifully lifting, U-wired shape.

What is the difference between a balcony bra and a plunge bra?

The key difference is the wire shape and where the cup sits. A balcony bra has a U-shaped wire that lifts the breast upward and sits higher in the centre — it pushes volume up. A plunge bra has a deeper V-shaped wire that pushes the breast inward, creating cleavage rather than lift. A balcony works beautifully under scoop necks and square necks. A plunge is better for V-necks and lower necklines. Most women benefit from having both in their lingerie drawer — they solve different wardrobe problems.

What necklines does a balcony bra work best with?

Scoop necks and square necklines are where the balcony bra excels. Because it sits lower at the outer edge — where the strap meets the cup — it stays completely hidden under both. At the same time, because it lifts the bust beautifully, it creates a great shape under these tops that a lower bra simply wouldn't give you. It also works well under bardot and off-the-shoulder styles for the same reason.

Is a balcony bra suitable for larger cup sizes?

Yes — with the right brand. If you're very full in the cup, particularly at the top or centre of the bust, some balcony bras can feel a little low. However, Empreinte balcony styles have exceptional depth in the cup and come up higher in the centre than most — they provide outstanding support and shape for larger cups. Marie Jo also offers excellent balcony bras in larger sizes. If you're unsure, our WhatsApp fitting service can help you find the right style for your shape.

What is the difference between a balcony bra and a half cup bra?

A half cup bra sits slightly lower than a classic balcony, with less coverage at the top of the cup. It's a particularly distinctive shape — Aubade is known for it — that's deeply décolleté and very elegant under lower-cut tops. A balcony bra offers more coverage and structure and tends to work across a wider range of necklines. If you're drawn to the Aubade aesthetic and want that lower, more revealing cut, our half cup bra page has more guidance.

Do you offer a fitting service for balcony bras?

Yes — visit us at the boutique in Wimbledon Village, or use our WhatsApp fitting service. Send us your current bra size and the necklines you're hoping to wear the bra under, and we'll recommend the right balcony style and size for you. Getting the right wire shape and cup depth makes a significant difference to how a balcony bra performs — it's well worth a conversation before you order.
