Frequently Asked Questions About Silk Nightwear
What grade of silk do you use in your nightwear?
All the brands we stock work with high-grade silk. Silk quality is measured by momme weight — the higher the momme, the denser, heavier, and more durable the fabric. Premium silk nightwear uses a significantly higher momme than cheaper alternatives, and the difference is immediately apparent in how the fabric drapes, how it feels against the skin, and how long it lasts. This is one of the clearest distinctions between a luxury silk nightwear brand and a high street alternative — and it's why a well-chosen silk chemise or nightdress can genuinely last for decades.
What is the difference between a silk chemise and a silk nightdress?
A silk chemise is typically shorter — often mid-thigh length — with a simple slip shape, delicate straps, and minimal structure. A silk nightdress tends to be longer, sometimes full-length, and may have more detailing. Both are beautiful for sleeping in, as a gift, or for a honeymoon. We stock both: Karen Mabon makes a particularly beautiful long silk nightdress in a classic slip shape, and Marjolaine occasionally produces a longer style as well. Lise Charmel and Luna Di Seta are both known for their chemises. If you're unsure which length is right for you, feel free to ask via our WhatsApp service.
Which brands make the best silk nightdresses?
For a full-length silk nightdress, we'd point you to Karen Mabon's long slip styles — beautifully printed, elegantly cut, and available in exclusive prints made for our boutique. Marjolaine occasionally offers a longer style in their signature silk with Calais lace detailing, which is exceptional. For silk chemises with exquisite lace, Lise Charmel is outstanding — a French house with a very loyal following for exactly this. And Luna Di Seta produces beautifully precise shorter chemises that are among our most consistently loved pieces.
How should I care for silk nightwear?
Most silk nightwear can be gently machine washed on a very delicate cycle at a low temperature, but always check the care label first and avoid any programme that agitates heavily. We highly recommend Soak Wash — a no-rinse, gentle wash formula designed for delicate fabrics. It's what we use ourselves, and it keeps silk looking and feeling its best over many years of wear. Never wring silk: gently press out excess water in a towel and dry flat, away from direct heat or sunlight.
Is silk nightwear suitable for all year round?
Yes — and this is one of silk's most underappreciated qualities. Silk is naturally temperature-regulating: it's a breathable, insulating fibre that keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, adapting to your body temperature rather than holding heat the way synthetic fabrics do. It's also smooth and lightweight enough that it doesn't tangle or cling as you sleep. Many of our customers who make the switch to silk tell us they sleep noticeably better, across all seasons.
What silk nightwear do you recommend as a gift?
A silk chemise or cami set is one of the most beautiful gifts there is — something most people would never quite buy for themselves, but which feels truly special once they have it. Our most popular gift choices in silk are Karen Mabon (bold, fun prints in beautiful silk, with pieces exclusive to our boutique), Lise Charmel (very elegant, with exquisite lace detailing), and Luna Di Seta cami sets (understated and effortlessly chic).
